I have put together some simple steps to help you take notice of how you breathe. But why is it important to breathe properly? Breathing from the diaphragm and not the chest means that the right amount of oxygen is getting to all the vital organs and replenishing them with essential nutrients, which can even make your skin look healthier as well as aid aerobic performance and improve blood flow to the muscles.
Breathing from the chest can create shallow breathing which can lead to hyperventilating, anxiety and panic attacks. Breathing from the diaphragm is the natural way to breathe and means you are using the full lungs and not just the top third. Take a look at your kids’ tummy go up and down when they sleep, as we get older the stresses of life cause anxiety and stress which in time makes us permanently breathe like this.
How can I learn to breathe properly?
Follow these simple steps:
- Place your left hand on your chest and right hand on your tummy.
- Now breathe in and inflate your tummy. Only your right hand should move up, your left hand should stay still.
- And breathe out, now your right hand should move down and again your left hand should be still.
- When anxious, take a breath in and count to 4, then breathe out counting to 8 and feel your shoulders drop and relax.
This is the quickest way to become relaxed, it may take practice but the health benefits are endless when done properly. The aim is to slow breathing down to 8 to 10 cycles per minute, 1 cycle being one in-breath and one out-breath, keep them slow and smooth.
**Top Tip** After cleansing your face, soak a face cloth in really warm water and wring out, put a couple of drops of Lavender essential oil, or my fav is Jasmine, onto the cloth and place over face. Take a couple of minutes to just lie back and inhale the fragrance using diaphragm breathing – ahhhh divine!!
Hope this helps everyone with relieving the stress, please leave a comment and subscribe 🙂
